ABSTRACT
The Imourkhssen Cu-Mo-Au-Ag deposit is located within the Ouzellagh–Siroua salient, at the junction between the central Anti-Atlas and the central High Atlas. This porphyry-type copper mineralization is hosted by the late Ediacaran magmatic suites (LEMS) of the Ouarzazate Group (580–539 Ma), namely: (i) the Assarag Suite, which includes the Askaoun granodiorite; (ii) the Amassine Suite, comprising the Imourkhssen granite; and (iii) the Ougougane Suite, represented by the Ougougane granite. The whole-rock geochemistry of these granitoids reveals a highly potassic calc-alkaline affinity typical of I-type granitoids. U–Pb zircon geochronological data indicates that the mineralized granitic porphyry and the Imourkhssen granite are dated 550 ± 2 Ma and 558 ± 1 Ma respectively. Therefore, the mineralized porphyry; previously interpreted as a simple apophysis of the latter; is in fact a distinct and younger intrusive body, recognized as an independent granitic intrusion, herein referred to as the Imourgane granite.
The hydrothermal alterations associated with the mineralization include: (1) potassic alteration, (2) chlorite–sericite alteration, (3) sericitic alteration, and (4) propylitic alteration, generally accompanied by pervasive silicification and pyritization. Mineralizing events comprise: (i) a primary dissemination of sulfides (molybdenite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, galena, and tennantite), corresponding to the initial magmatic-hydrothermal precipitation; and (ii) a subsequent hydrothermal stage channeled through a network of NNE–SSW to N–S structures, within which pyrite, chalcopyrite, bornite, covellite, digenite, sphalerite, hematite, galena, gold, and chenguodaite develop. The supergene stage is characterized by the formation of malachite, azurite, barite, hematite, epsomite, and chrysocolla.
Aeromagnetic data from the Assarag area were processed using multiple transformations, allowing the structural features of the Assarag 1:50,000 sheet to be characterized. Reduction to the pole (RTP), Upward Continuation (UC), and Center for Exploration Targeting (CET) filters enabled the mapping of NNE–SSW, NNW–SSE, and NE–SW trending faults in the northern part of the area, as well as a curved magnetic halo in the southwest. Upward continuation filtering divided the area into two magnetic morpho-structural domains: a weakly magnetic northern region and a strongly magnetic southern region, while Euler Deconvolution (ED) supports the extracted lineaments. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Independent Component Analysis (ICA) corroborate these structures and reveal an additional ENE–WSW trending feature. Two-dimensional continuous wavelet transforms (2D CWT) indicate that the NNE, NNW, and NE trends correspond to shallow structures, while deep-seated NW–SE and ENE–WSW lineaments are also present. We interpret the deep ENE trend as part of the South Atlas Fault (SAF) that crosscuts the region. In addition, shallow NE–SW and NNE–SSW faults likely acted as conduits for hydrothermal fluids responsible for the Cu–Mo–Au–Ag mineralization at Imourkhssen.
These results are integrated into the broader geodynamic framework of the magmatic– hydrothermal evolution of the Ouarzazate Silicic Large Igneous Province (SLIP). This postPan-African magmatic activity, coupled with the structural role of major regional faults, favored diffuse hydrothermal circulation that led to the development of a porphyry–epithermal metallogenic province in the Saghro terrane, of which the Imourkhssen deposit represents a key expression.
