ABSTRACT
Ammoniacal nitrogen (N-NH3) is a contaminant commonly found in Canadian mining effluents and is subject to a regulatory limit of 0.5 mg/L under the Metal and Diamond Mining Effluent Regulations (MDMER). In northern regions, these effluents are characterized by complex anionic matrices dominated by Cl- (up to 63 g/L) and SO42- (up to 3 g/L), whose effects on the performance of microbubble ozonation remain insufficiently documented. This study evaluated the effect of salinity on N-NH3 treatment by microbubble ozonation (pH 9, 20 °C, O3 flow rate = 16 g/h). Semi-batch experiments were conducted using 21 synthetic effluents (S0-S20) and two real mining effluents (R1 and R2). For chloride (Cl-), three regimes governed by the Cl-/N-NH3 mass ratio were identified: a favorable zone (ratio ≤ 10), where Cl- enhances mass transfer without affecting •OH radicals; a transition zone (10 ≤ ratio ≤ 500), where reactive chlorine species (RCS) slow down the reaction kinetics while maintaining N-NH3 removal efficiencies (≥ 99.7%); and an inhibition zone (ratio ≈ 600, corresponding to 30 g/L Cl-), where removal efficiency is limited to 32.8%, with the inhibition threshold occurring between 25 and 30 g/L Cl-. For sulfate (SO42-), no significant inhibition was observed (removal > 99.6% for 0.1-2.5 g/L SO42-), due to the limited formation of SO4•- radicals under microbubble ozonation conditions, thereby preserving •OH availability for N-NH3 oxidation. The investigation of combined chloride-sulfate effluents revealed three interaction regimes: positive at low concentrations, moderately additive at intermediate concentrations, and unexpectedly positive at high chloride concentrations, where SO42- mitigated inhibition through enhanced mass transfer. Experiments conducted with real mining effluents validated the trends observed in synthetic matrices. Effluent R1 (62.5 g/L Cl-, N-NH3 = 431 mg/L, transition zone) achieved 100% removal within 270 min, with 40% of nitrogen converted to N2 through RCS pathways. Effluent R2 (2.9 g/L SO42-, N-NH3 = 133.6 mg/L, favorable zone) achieved 99.9% removal within 180 min, with complete conversion to NO3-. Kinetic analysis revealed a consistent progression of reaction orders: zero-order kinetics in the favorable zone, first-order kinetics in the transition zone as well as in sulfate-containing, combined, and real effluents, and second-order kinetics in the inhibition zone. These results show that microbubble ozonation is effective process for N-NH3 treatment in saline mining effluents containing up to 62.5 g/L Cl-, provided that the Cl-/N-NH3 mass ratio and the anionic composition of the matrix are considered during process design.
